This is to remind staff to consider recommending the appointment of a Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) in cases where a child could be at risk of becoming involved or interested in gang activity. The CASA program is restricted in its ability to work with confirmed gang members or adjudicated juvenile delinquents. However, children just beginning to show interest in gangs or those at risk of gang involvement may benefit from the extra attention a CASA may provide. A CASA can advocate for special programs and early intervention services to help a child. CSWs must obtain a court order requesting that the child be referred to the CASA program for appointment of a CASA. Children at risk of delinquent behavior or gang involvement may also be referred to the START Unit (Start Taking Action Responsibly Today) east for regions 1, 3 , 4, 7 and 8 at (626) 229-3803 or west for regions 2, 5, 6 and adoptions at (213) 639-4598. The FAST Unit (Family Assessment Services Team) at (323) 260-3130 specializes in working with at-risk gang kids. These specialized units include the CASA in case planning and treatment. It is important that we take advantage of all possible resources available to our at-risk children. If it makes a difference in one child's life, the effort is worthwhile.
